Rich Dad, Poor Dad Sushi

The last few months have been a small journey in sushi eating. After being displaced from our regular sushi haunt, Nogawa, by a change in chef, we set out to find some reasonably priced, good sushi. Because let’s face it, on our salaries, to be able eat a good quality omakase sushi meal weekly, we’d not only need a rich daddy but a sugar-daddy as well.

We tried a couple of places – including an unfortunate encounter at The Plaza where the fish wasn’t super fresh and the chef’s highly recommended ‘Special house salad’ was served with a ketchup-chilli dressing which I can only describe as bad…in a bad way. We also had some good meals – lunch at Ginza Ichi – the chi chi omakase-only restaurant at Scott’s Square – which is one of those places where rich dad (or sugar dad) would fit right into.

The preparation and presentation of their food was exquisite, but personally, for the price we paid, I thought the umami factor was underwhelming. Nonetheless, did I mention the presentation was exquisite?

The starter was a medley of fish: fried, in jellied dashi with fava bean, accompanied with white and green asparagus with miso (which was delectable!)

Marinated, seared Tuna sashimi with raw lotus root chips.

Sea eel. With salt or sweet sauce. Salt is my preferred. Allows you to taste the natural sweetness of the eel.

And of course what is a meal without some beautiful, creamy Uni. That heavenly gift from the sea.

This meal was rich compared to another good place we tried. Itacho Sushi.Yes…I did say that. It was surprisingly good. But that visit is another installment in the Rich Dad, Poor Dad sushi series. Till next time….
