Contemplating National Day, I pondered all the things that I like about Singapore.
#1: We are a sunny island set in the sea
This view always makes me feel glad to be alive.
#2: Where else can you find food like this (ok…maybe Malaysia…But then, Malaysia is almost our sister country)
Pork Noodles (with sliced and minced pork, meat balls and pig’s liver) is definitely a signature local food – even the Malaysians are come here for it (specifically 11 of them whome we met at Crawford Lane Bak Chor Mee).
Apparently there is always a queue for these noodles. We waited one hour before we got to order (along with 11 Malaysians who had driven over just for a taste of these noodles).
View from the top before it goes down the hole.
The noodles are good though missing a little bit of texture. A little bit of crunchy veggie wouldn’t go astray. Taste-wise: Every strand of noodle is coated with the sweet-sour, malty black vinegar and chilli sauce; and peppered with lardons and crispy fried salted fish. However, I won’t go so far as to say it was really worth the one hour wait.
#3: We still have reminders of our colourful past (although those are fast disappearing)
Strains from Deng Li Jun’s Biao Wo De Xing> brings a lump of nostalgia to my throat. I wish there was a time machine so I could zap myself back to the days of Beauty World and nights at the cabaret, followed by supper in Chinatown… Ni wen wo ai ni you dou sheng, Wo ai ni you ji fen…
