Dieting just makes me want to stuff my face even more. So far it’s been Diet: 0, Binge eating: 10
Trying to stay away from carbs means that I have two helpings of mashed potatoes at dinner (instead of one); and half a loaf of garlic bread with my caesar salad for lunch (instead of just croutons). I’ve also taken to ogling at all the food porn I can find.
Trawling through my own photos recently ‘unearthed’ a couple of forgotten pictures of an earlier trip to Jakarta where we had some mind-blowing nasi padang.
This picture cannot begin to describe the intense, rich flavours of these humble dishes.
– Chive omelette, sizzled in piping hot oil that it “puffs” and “blooms” and gets that deliciously greasy, eggy mouthfeel.
– Sambal terong or eggplant tossed in a fragrant gravy of blended chillis and shallots, sweetened with a little palm sugar and balanced off with a tiny bit of tantalising, sour tamarind juice.
– Green (unripe) jackfruit simmered in spicy coconut milk flavoured with various aromatics and dried shrimp until the jackfruit is softly braised and the coconut milk is thickened and enriched with the flavours of the herbs and shrimp.
– THE MOST ‘power’ sambal belachan, chilli sauce, that is equal parts spicy, tangy and fortified with the pungency of the belachan
It was plain unforgettable.
Here it is, just a simple stall in Ambassador Mall in Jakarta, but OH what a punch it packed…Am also loving the giant basket of vegetables for the gado gado.
It’s midnight as I’m writing this pos, and all I can think about now is having a double G&T and munching on these sweet sambal fries! Good night my fellow foodies!
